Have been going through various fanfiction archives and come across so many WIPs that are now years old and will never be finished that not only do I feel a bit sad, I also feel guilty, because there are several of my own fics that technically I'm still working on but just don't have the time to work on significantly.
It also feels a bit strange because so many of my favourite writers have moved on to other fandoms so it would be out of the question and rude beyond the usual sort of rude to even ask if they're planning to continue the WIPs. I just find it odd that I really can't find any other fandom that I fit in as much in as the Harry Potter one (of which I was only ever the silent lurker-type) nor find as worthwhile. That's not to say I don't love anything as much - I love the Chrestomanci series far more than I do Harry Potter, for example. The problem is, I can't imagine writing any of the in depth world-building type fanfics in that fandom because... it's already been done!
From the perspective of an original writer, that does seem rather arrogant to say fanfiction is necessary to make up for the failures of the original writer - so I completely get where some like Robin Hobb are coming from in their dislike of fanfiction - but for me at least it's true. There seems to be something rather subliminal that a certain sort of reader can pick up about a writer and one of those things is the interest of the writer in her own creation. Does she seem the sort who likes going into back-stories and connecting all the details of the fictional universe? The writers like this - or who to me are like this - seem to be the ones I'm least interested in actually writing any fanfic for, least of all slash or femmeslash. There's almost no need.
So, for all I get very snarky about JKR and her ability to plot etc etc, part of me still hopes she does still continue writing about the Harry Potter world. Firstly because, in all probability, she'll get better at it and secondly because she will always ignore or leave out just enough for me to worm my way into... |

Unfortunately I am completely behind on my fanfic writing schedule, having aken to re-reading old community posts (yes, I'm one of those saddos) and looking up the ghosts of fanfic past. A bit sad to see some of the 'as of yet unfinished' magnum opus' lying around (Part 3 of the Anger Management series por ejemplo) - reminds me of how good the HP fandom was (and still is!). Almost makes one wish JKR would write some more, just for us to read and let rip again. |

As I've still got a really nice LJ going, I must confess that I've been very... lax when it comes to my IJ. I do intend for it to become a bit more than just a growing collection of very cool journals on my f-list - perhaps I ought to discipline myself to do at least one post a fortnight or summat.
Or just get on with some of that fanfiction/writing.

Have recently started re-writing one of my more popular fanfics - 'Beneath the Silk' - to be more in line with canon (as ever, much of what JKR has left us is so much more interesting to make use of than what I could have imagined pre-DH). I'm definitely going to keep Jewish!Snape, if only because I rather liked the idea of a clash between culturally Jewish magic (as embodied by the Prince family) and culturally Christian magic (as embodied by Dumbledore), but reading the original, I cringe at the simplified abuse suffered by Snape at the hands of Dumbledore. Youth, as ever, is my excuse, but that's one of the things I'm definitely changing.
As many original characters as can be gotten rid of (Lira... *coughs*) will be as well as Snape's amazing magical Sue-ish siblings. I do need a link with his muggle family, so I'll probably keep one of his nieces, but as a student in Hogwarts. Talking of links, the Links storyline will be kept - it is fanfiction after all, and I don't want to eradicate the entire original piece. Besides, the OotP is probably the most useless anti-evil establishment group I've ever read of, if JKR's portrayal in the books is to be believed, so a little tweaking can't be all bad. |

This, for those interested, is actually mmoa from lj, but what with so many people heading to IJ as a fic/picdump, I decided to join up as well. This'll mostly be a writing (ie fanfic) journal, if that, because I am rather devoted to my little ol' LJ. |
